We arrived in Chamonix on 30th
of august and stayed 2 nights in an Airbnb apartment (www.airbnb.com/rooms/13868124)
which is very centrally located having a good view of the mountains straight
from the bed and overlooking a number of restaurants and bars. We arranged
to leave the car in underground parking of the apartment – at a little cost.
1 September – Col des Montets (1465 meters
or 4800 feet) to Refuge Le Flegere (1877 meters or 6170 feet) : 8.1 km
A city bus ride took us to Col des Montets
where we planned to start our tour. There is a wildlife center (Reserve
Naturelle des Aiguilles Rouges) at that point and part of the area is refuge but
if you want to see wildlife bring a picture book!
From Col des Montets (1465 meters or 4800
feet) it is a steady climb to Lac Blanc (2367 meters or 7766 feet).
The highlight of today is the trail itself
being the lake trail. The other highlight of this hike is the constant view of
the Mont Blanc and the surrounding mountains.
Before we reached Lac Blanc we passed by Lacs
des Cheserys, Lacs de Montagne.
At one point there are ladders as a
climbing aid. At first Ferda wasn’t sure but then she scampered up them. As
well as ladders there are steps at the steepest locations.
The view all around is majestic! The refuge
at Lac Blanc serves excellent coffee – this seems to be a preferred day hike
for many coming up from Chamonix – either on foot or partially by cable car. There
were not that many people until there, which was really crowded. Then it
thinned out considerably.
We met a young couple with a 8 months old
baby in dad’s backpack.
After the coffee break we headed to Refuge Flegere. All day we had great views of the mountains
all around – glaciers and the cascades coming down from them.
Refuge Flegere – an older refuge but well cared for and clean. It was not crowded, we stayed in 5 beds room with a pleasant guy not snoring at all. (http://www.chamonix.net/english/generic/Refuge-de-la-Fl%C3%A9g%C3%A8re/244)
We discovered that in the land of wine and cheese they make excellent dark beer!
Dinner was excellent but people here seem to consider a slice of bread, jelly and tea as an adequate breakfast.
The view is spectacular! Great photos.
